FireWire (IEEE 1394) is a personal computer serial interface bus standard offering high-speed communications and isochronous real time data services. Offering "plug and play" capability between the camera and the host computer eliminates the need for expensive cabling and a framegrabber. Cable lengths are limited to 4.5 meters. However, cables up to 10 meters can be used with careful attention to cable quality and environmental concerns such as noise. Peer-to-peer device communication and high-sustained data transfer data rates makes Firewire a viable interface for demanding machine vision applications. Hot swapping capability reduces maintenance down time and eliminates the need for computer reboot when replacing cameras during test or integration. |

Gigabit Ethernet, usually referred to as GigE, offers camera users increased data transfer speeds and cable lengths compared to FireWire and USB 2.0. High bandwidth (1000 Mbps) allows large uncompressed images to be transferred quickly in real time. GigE cameras connect to a standard Network Interface Card (NIC) to stream the image data to the system memory. The "plug and play" functionality between the camera and the host computer eliminates the need for expensive frame grabbers. Long cable runs are supported up to a maximum length of 100 meters and the use of standard CAT5e or CAT6 cabling helps to keep cabling cost to a minimum. GigE is highly scalable, as it will follow the roadmap for Ethernet bandwidth. As 10GigE becomes mainstream, Gigabit Ethernet will be the fastest connection in the industry. Since GigE increases the maximum bandwidth that was set by USB 2.0 and FireWire, switching from Camera Link to Gigabit Ethernet will be appealing for a diverse range of applications. |
